## Standards and approvals

| Product form | Standards |
|---|---|
| Seamless tube and pipe | ASTM B668, EN 10216-5, SEW 400, SS 14 25 84, NFA 49-217 |
| Plate, sheet and strip | ASTM B709, EN 10088-2, SS 14 25 84 |
| Bar and forging stock | EN 10088-3, EN 10272, SS 14 25 84 |
| Fittings | ASTM A403, chemistry and mechanicals to ASTM B668 |

Approvals: ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I (Code Case 1325-18),
Section III and Section VIII Division 1; VdTUV Werkstoffblatt 483;
NACE MR0103; NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156.

Note on specifying forgings: ASTM B668 covers seamless tube and pipe, so it is
not on its own the correct call-out for a forged ring, flange or disc. Use
EN 10272 or EN 10088-3 for forged bar, rings and discs, or ASTM A403 for
fittings with chemistry and mechanicals to B668.

## Corrosion performance

Phosphoric acid: the most widely used metallic material for evaporator tubes in
wet-process phosphoric acid plant, with service lives over ten years. In
contaminated 95% superphosphoric acid at 200 C over 20 days the corrosion rate
was 0.03 mm/year, against 0.10 mm/year for Alloy 904L and 0.23 mm/year for
UNS N08020.

Sulphuric acid: suitable for piping and heat exchangers, particularly 40-70%
deaerated acid and above 85%. Resistance in concentrated 98% acid is roughly
equal to Alloy C. In chloride-contaminated sulphuric acid above about 20%
concentration it performs better than super-duplex SAF 2507.

Other media: more resistant to hydrochloric acid than lower Cr-Mo stainless
steels; very good in hydrofluoric and hydrofluosilicic acid; far better than
316L and better than 904L in formic acid; below 0.15 mm/year in the ASTM A262
Practice C Huey test; considerably better than 304 and 316 in sodium hydroxide.

Pitting, crevice and SCC: critical pitting temperature in synthetic seawater is
higher than Alloy 904L and Alloy 825. In ASTM G48 Method B crevice testing it
outperformed Alloy 825. In boiling 43% NaOH plus 6.7% NaCl at 142 C for 500
hours it showed no cracking while Alloy 800 and Alloy 904L cracked. It also
resists SCC in combined H2S and chloride environments.

Intergranular corrosion: per ASTM G28, at least 30 minutes in the critical
600-700 C band without intergranular attack, longer than any normal weld cycle.

Limitations: in seawater specifically, super-duplex SAF 2507 is more resistant
than Sanicro 28. Avoid prolonged exposure above 600 C because of intermetallic
phase embrittlement.

## Heat treatment

Solution annealing at 1100-1160 C (2010-2120 F), hold 10 to 30 minutes, water
quench. Forged rings, discs and heavy shafts should always be water quenched.

## Forging route used for this grade

EAF melting, AOD or VOD refining, ESR remelting, controlled-temperature open-die
forging or ring rolling with sufficient reduction through the full section,
solution annealing and water quench, machining, then inspection.

## Machining and welding

Machining: reduce cutting speed by about 50 to 55% compared with Sanmac 316/316L
when turning with coated cemented carbide tooling. Reduce feed only slightly.

Welding: TIG/GTAW preferred, then MIG/GMAW and MMA/SMAW. Heat input below
1.0 kJ/mm, interpass temperature below 150 C, stringer bead technique.
Fillers: ISO 14343 S 27 31 4 Cu L / AWS A5.9 ER383 for TIG and MIG;
ISO 3581 E 27 31 4 Cu L R / AWS A5.4 E383-16 for MMA. No preheat required.
