SUS 347 is the JIS designation for a niobium and tantalum stabilized 18-8 austenitic stainless steel, equivalent to AISI 347, UNS S34700 and EN 1.4550 (X6CrNiNb18-10). Niobium and tantalum hold carbon more strongly than chromium does, so their carbides form inside the grains rather than as a chromium-depleted network along the grain boundaries. The grade therefore keeps its corrosion resistance after welding and after time spent in the sensitizing range, and it is the usual choice for forged parts that see intermittent heating between 427 C (800 F) and 899 C (1650 F).
1. Chemical Composition of SUS 347
| Element | C | Mn | Si | P | S | Cr | Ni | Nb + Ta | Fe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| % | 0.08 max | 2.00 max | 1.00 max | 0.045 max | 0.030 max | 17.0 - 19.0 | 9.0 - 13.0 | 10 x C min 1.10 max (S34700) | Balance |
EN 1.4550 narrows nickel to 9.0 - 12.0 % and sulfur to 0.015 % max. Several pipe and forging specifications hold silicon to 0.75 %. The 347H variant raises carbon to 0.04 - 0.10 % for better creep strength. We melt to the limits of whichever specification appears on the purchase order.

Behaviour at temperature
For the equivalent grade 1.4550, published 0.2 % proof strength runs at roughly 175 MPa at 100 C, 155 MPa at 200 C, 136 MPa at 300 C, 125 MPa at 400 C and 119 MPa at 500 C, with the elastic modulus falling from 194 GPa to 165 GPa across the same span. Niobium stabilization is what holds these values after long exposure in the carbide precipitation range, and it is the main reason 347 outperforms titanium-stabilized 321 in creep and stress rupture. Continuous service is limited by scaling at 871 C (1600 F).

5. Forging and Heat Treatment
| Operation | Temperature | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Forging | 1149 - 1232 C (2100 - 2250 F) | Heat uniformly. Do not forge below 927 C (1700 F). The alloy keeps high strength at red heat, so more power per unit of reduction is needed than for mild steel. |
| Cooling after forging | - | Air cooling is permitted, but full corrosion resistance requires a water quench or an anneal. |
| Solution annealing | 1010 - 1093 C (1850 - 2000 F) | Water quench. Resulting hardness about 150 HB. |
| Stabilizing treatment | 843 - 899 C (1550 - 1650 F) | Applied where service temperature reaches about 871 C, for best intergranular corrosion resistance. |
| Hardening | - | Not hardenable by heat treatment. Strength is raised only by cold work. |
Melting routes available at our works for this grade are EAF plus VOD, with ESR remelting where a cleaner and more homogeneous structure is needed for rotating or pressure-retaining parts.
Welding
All common shielded-fusion and resistance processes are suitable. Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended because of carbon pick-up. AWS E347 and ER347 consumables are the normal match. Keep heat input, base-metal dilution and joint restraint low to limit hot cracking. The alloy can be used as welded. Tests on the equivalent 1.4550 grade show resistance to intergranular attack both as heat treated and after a sensitizing treatment, so post-weld heat treatment is not normally mandatory, though a stabilizing treatment is worth considering for hot service.
6. Corrosion Resistance
Annealed SUS 347 resists atmospheric corrosion, foodstuffs, sterilizing solutions, many organic chemicals and dyestuffs, and a broad range of inorganic chemicals. Published ratings are good in nitric acid and salt spray and excellent in humid atmospheres. Performance is moderate in sulfuric and phosphoric acid, acetic acid, sodium hydroxide and sour oil and gas service, and restricted in sea water. Like every austenitic stainless steel it stays vulnerable to pitting and crevice attack at high chloride levels, so it is not a replacement for a duplex or 6Mo grade in seawater duty. For those services see A182-F53, A182-F55 or A182-F44. Surfaces should be free of scale, lubricant and embedded iron. Cleaning and passivation after machining is recommended.
7. Typical Applications for SUS 347 Forgings
The grade is specified wherever a welded or hot-running 18-8 component would otherwise sensitize. Forged rings, seamless rolled rings and shafts in SUS 347 go into aircraft collector rings and piston-engine exhaust manifolds, expansion joints and high-temperature chemical process equipment. Forged flanges, tube sheets, forged tubes and pipe components serve heat exchangers, separators, superheaters, boilers and chemical piping, together with pulp and paper digesters, liquor tanks and paper machines.
In refining, the stabilized structure is the reason 347 is chosen for polythionic acid service, where unstabilized austenitics are open to intergranular stress corrosion cracking during shutdowns. Forged valve bodies, stems, seat rings and blocks in SUS 347 are used in ball, gate, globe, check and plug valves. Forged bars, gears, spindles and sleeves go into turbines, gas compressors, gearboxes and power transmission. Forged discs, bushings and nozzles are used in food processing and storage equipment, pharmaceutical and biochemical plant, thermal oxidizers in waste treatment, shipbuilding and general heavy machinery.

9. SUS 347 Questions and Answers
What is SUS 347 stainless steel?
SUS 347 is the JIS designation for a niobium and tantalum stabilized 18-8 austenitic stainless steel, equivalent to AISI 347, UNS S34700 and EN 1.4550 (X6CrNiNb18-10). The stabilizing elements tie up carbon as NbC and TaC inside the grains instead of letting chromium carbides form at the grain boundaries, which is what gives the grade its intergranular corrosion resistance.
What is the chemical composition of SUS 347?
Carbon 0.08 % max, manganese 2.00 % max, silicon 1.00 % max, phosphorus 0.045 % max, sulfur 0.030 % max, chromium 17.0 to 19.0 %, nickel 9.0 to 13.0 %, niobium plus tantalum 10 x carbon minimum with 1.10 % max for UNS S34700, balance iron.
What are the mechanical properties of SUS 347 forgings?
Solution-annealed minimums are 515 MPa (75 ksi) tensile strength and 205 MPa (30 ksi) yield at 0.2 % offset. Minimum elongation is 30 % for ASTM A182 F347 forged flanges and fittings and 40 % for bar, plate and pipe. Maximum hardness is about 201 HBW.
SUS 347 or SUS 321, which should I specify?
Both are stabilized 18-8 grades. 321 uses titanium, 347 uses niobium and tantalum. Titanium oxidizes and is lost across the welding arc, so 347 is the better choice for welded assemblies and is the basis of the matching filler metal. 347 also carries higher creep and stress rupture strength. 321 is usually cheaper and remains adequate for less demanding duty.
How does SUS 347 compare with 316?
They solve different problems. 316 adds molybdenum for chloride and pitting resistance. 347 adds niobium for stability at temperature and after welding. Use 316 for marine and chloride service and 347 where sensitization is the controlling risk.
What is the maximum service temperature of SUS 347?
Safe scaling temperature for continuous service is 871 C (1600 F). The grade is recommended for applications with intermittent heating between 427 C (800 F) and 899 C (1650 F).
How should SUS 347 forgings be heat treated?
Solution anneal at 1010 to 1093 C (1850 to 2000 F) and water quench. Where service reaches about 871 C, add a stabilizing treatment at 843 to 899 C (1550 to 1650 F). The grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold work.
